The New Cathedral
INTRODUCTION:
You are auditioning for a new show on PBS called The New Cathedral. You want to be the architect that gets to help design a new cathedral, but you want to bring in a historical element to the show. In order to pass your audition, you will need to know a little history about how Cathedrals were designed, especially medieval cathedrals that allowed a lot of light into them. (after all, you cant be close to god without a lot of natural light)
In your research, you discover that you can have a lot of light in your cathedral by using a flying buttress. Now it is time to find out what they are all about if you want to get architect job!

Locate three cathedrals in Europe that utilize the flying buttress in their design. Use Google Earth to find a good street view that allows the unobstructed view of the flying buttresses on the cathedral. Save a screenshot of the cathedrals for use in your portfolio. Place a marker on the cathedral so that it can be referenced later.

Save your each of your Places as a .KMZ file. You will share these Places with others in your class to create a comprehensive tour of cathedrals that use the flying buttress in their construction.
You will compile these various places with others in your class so that you can create a tour of flying buttresses that you can use for stock footage in your new show. Many shows use Google Earth to zoom in to areas that they are talking about.
