Copyright Scavenger Hunt Activity
This activity has been designed to help you understand some of the basics of copyright, particularly as it pertains to instructional Web page development. The ultimate goal is to inform you of some of the rules so that you do not inadvertently break them and get into trouble.
Instructions: There are three scavenger hunts below that will help to answer some questions in regard to building your website. Each hunt has one or more questions to be answered based on the information found on the linked Web site. Your job is to hunt through each site and answer the corresponding questions.

Use this link to the University of Maryland to answer the following questions:
- What is a copyright?
- What are the three requirements for something to be copyrighted?
- What cannot be copyrighted?
- What is the definition of "fair use"?
- What can be copied?
Hunt 2: Using pictures or graphics on your website
Use this link to Wikipedia to answer the following questions:
- What type of website has pictures available to add to your website without needing to gain permission from the user?
- What are the requirements that you must follow when you want to use information or pictures from Wikipedia?
Hunt 3: Including student work or pictures on your website
Use the Boise School District web guidelines page to answer the following questions:
- When storing website data on a school server, what ownership do students have of content?
- What information about students may be published unless not approved by a parent or guardian? (Think FERPA)
- Is permission required to post student work on your website? And if so, who would need to give it?
