Learner Description: The netiquette rules on this page were written for educators using an online forum to exchange ideas and opinions in the areas of Pre-Engineering education. These rules are suitable for all professionals in the educational fields.

What is netiquette? Netiquette is an offshoot of the phrase etiquette, which refers to a set of rules for cordial discussion between to people. Netiquette refers to a set of rules for people to follow when they are talking to each other over the internet. Netiquette rules started to be developed when extreme conversations between bloggers started to take away from the initial topics.

Creating a message. In an online message board, you have the opportunity to have conversations with other likeminded individuals. It is important to remember that they are just that, individuals. Conversations should be constructive to both parties. Remember, you should type like you would talk. That means you should not use all capitals. Capitals imply shouting, and you can not have a conversation by shouting.

Since you are messaging with a group of professionals, it is always a good idea to do a spell check before submitting a post. You don’t want to give the perception that grammar was not important enough to check.

Nothing last forever (except posts on the internet) Whenever something gets posted to the internet, it gets cached away and saved all over the place. Even if you delete something from a post, chances are good it will be around forever. It is a good idea not to post anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to your grandmother about. She might be reading.

Helpful Hints to Remember:

  1. Remember, you are talking to another person, not a machine.
  2. Don’t type in all CAPITALS, this is considered shouting and rude.
  3. Respect other peoples time. Make posts meaningful and concise.
  4. Always check spelling.
  5. Once a post is released into the “wild”, you can never get it back.
